I'm a late comer to this amazing movie! I just heard about it when I was watching Jenny's kitchen on prime video. Since hearing about it, I've heard marvelous things about the movie so decided to check it out on a cold snowy day in Oklahoma. I do not regret my decision to watch it. I feel the strongest character in the movie is the poor daughter. She was the one who devised the plan to get her family all into the house. She is the one that the whole family thought she was so smart in making the documents and coming up with the plans for the whole family to get in. They also was talking about how she looked like she fit in to that lifestyle. The son always had his doubts about his fitting and with that lifestyle. Even when he asked the rich daughter if he fitting in, she didn't say yes. Because she knew that he really didn't. But since she liked him, she didn't want to tell him that he did not fit in. All she did was shrug her shoulders. Then at the end of the movie when he realizes his dad was in the basement and he wrote a letter to his dad saying he would work every day until he raised enough money to buy the house than his dad could come back up. Stairs the same cut to the son being in the old basement house, which tells us that more than likely the son never was able to earn enough money to buy the house. I believe it indicates that he really doesn't fit in to their rich culture. And it only person who did fit in died which was his sister.

@ritaturner9906
I thought the dad killed the father because the man who lived in hideout had nothing but respect for the owner. And he wanted to tell him something but the man was only concerned on getting keys and made a face that he smelled just like he always said about the driver, so it was like because he didn’t respect the man who respected him, he killed him and then ran to do penance in honor of the other guy
Комментарий от : @ritaturner9906

@ritaturner9906
I thought it was strange when the girl was looking for Kevin that she went directly to the basement and not out to the party first. That she was obviously would have seen open door to hideout and still carried Kevin out. I think they could have done away with that scene. It made no sense. Why didn’t the girl tell everyone about the door. But I feel like what they could have done is take that scene out, when the father ran back to hideout, he would have seen son, could have assumed he was dead and then closed himself in. Then no one would have known about hideout and the police find the son, take him to hospital and that’s it.

@dunkyourdonuts2282
I think the fact that the audience (especially from the west) are so ready to dismiss sins of the poorer family and yet frame the rich couple talking in the privacy of their own home about how their driver smells weird sometimes as “pure evil” that he deserves to be killed, the fact that people read so much into the hypocricy and facades of the rich family yet completely ignore the poorer family's arc is literally them growing more and more hypocritical while their jobs were built off lies, in itself is the deeper phenomenon that should be studied. The movie never depeicted anything but poverty to be the antonogist. The movie descrives poverty being the root of sin, and judging from the comments it really seems this way.

there are so many symbols, setups and payoffs. One interesting detail that I noticed is that just before the rich mother pays Kevin , she takes out couple of bills from the envelope. Then goes and tells him that she will pay exactly what she payed to his friend and she even added some for the inflation. To me it seemed like lying to impress in in human nature, no matter rich or poor.

Literally turned this movie on thinking it was the horror movie and stayed for the mess! It was so good,if I was the mom I would’ve never let the old maid in. I feel like a real high value maid would’ve denied her, called the police, or alerted their employers. Especially after she saw the bruises on her face which I don’t remember being explained? she should’ve known she was up to no good and she was all suspiciously hasty over the door cam. But the family was getting greedy with their scheme and sneaking around so it was all bound to end up in shambles eventually. It’s sick how that boy preyed upon that young girl and her family 😭😭😭

@Oblinski
It's interesting to note as well that once the kim family ascended to the rich life in the brief time the rich family were on vacation they too became disgusted at the reality of the basement couple. They lost all respect for the couple placing themselves on a pedestal above them even when it came down to it they were the same. With the maid called the mom her "sister" in leeching, but the mom burning that bridge. I think it was implied that the rich mom was a drug addict as the rich are often prone to drugs since they can afford them. The rich dad, however for not liking the poor was into the disgusting clothing left behind by the daughter. Showing the hypocrite tendencies of the rich family and their "disdain" for the poor.

Great movie, the only thing i dont like is that the plot and story revieil a massive problem with society. But does not offer a solution. Unfortunately this may influence young impressionable people to turn to communism, which is undoubtedly even worse then run-away capitalism 🤷.
Комментарий от : @TPkills

@wellobviously
One obvious theme I noticed was how money made life seem easier and better. Even the mom was saying that the Park family was nice because they were rich. But deep down they lacked empathy for others who weren’t in the same social class. The rich mom couldn’t even do basic labor. This demonstrates how wealth is meaningless and can create a sense of indifference towards flesh and blood people. So don’t ever think that money will resolve all your problems. One thing I liked was that even though the Kim family didn’t have a lot of money, they helped each other and were able to solve problems using their individual gifts and talents. Unfortunately they used it the wrong way.

I also think it is important to point out that, out of the entire Kim Family, the daughter was the one that fit in most closely with the Upper Class. She had no troubles or qualms keeping up appearances and doing it all for the money. Her death at the hands of someone else that is incredibly poor just reads like the Crab Bucket to me.
The Son had the most realistic chances to become an actual part of the rich family, but it all came crumbling down for him, once he started doubting himself. This mirrors him being the only one in the family to be hired by a real recommendation, unlike the rest of his family.

@Experiment-qq8mq
What fascinated me was how Guk-moon kwang's death set off a series of tragedies among parasites. For me, she represented peace and balance because she was not greedy and only aimed to benefit as much as the family leached off of her. It was a mutual peace until the Kim family disrupted the balance. Her death represented the tipping of the scales, releasing greed and desperation among parasites which lead to a blood bath.

I understand that there's no supposed protagonist in this film and that everyone is guilty in some form. But I do feel that Bong is paying homage to those who strive to keep the peace and fight for balance instead of self liberation in a parasitic system.

I see many people focus on mr.kim's poverty, and their challenging life due to poverty.
But in Korea, a lot of people focus on the Underdogma effect. You can see how Kim's family do not have a job until Mr.Park gives them one. (Which is a high salay job compared to the ones they could've had) Even though tjey could've had so many stable jobs that pays them regular salary, they only make pizza box which clearly does not require hard working, waking up early every morning, etc. They lived their whole life like that. No plan, just getting throughout the day. They are not sick or injured. They are just lazy and not willing to do any hard work. That' why the movie's name is Parasite. They don't try anything,they just stick to the rich family and try to rip them off with highly priced low quality tutoring, housekeeping . We tend to cheer for the little ones, against the rich people. But the reality is, at least in the movie, the reason why they are poor, is because they lived their life like that. No plan is their plan. And that's why they're poor.

And Kevin and Jessica is maybe smart. But Cleary Not Hard working.Koreans highly value hardworking. But in the movie, they are described as lazy people. This is a clear negative set up in Korean's view.

They only got the job because the rich people are gullible. But there is a meaning in this word 'gullible'. Rich people have a very strong inner circle between themselves, so they just believe in whatever the innercircles recommend.

Koreans tend to hustle at whatever we do. Thats our culture. So in Korean's perspective, Kim's family is parasite itself. No hard work, not trying at anything, just ripping off rich people.

You know what I think is really funny is you sitting there complaining about capitalism with a wall of movies behind you which probably cost thousands of dollars. And you're on YouTube which most people watch on their smartphones or computers.. You said you were surprised that this movie won the Oscar... I'm not because Hollywood's one of the biggest most hypocritical cities in the world and I used still live there. Complaining about Trumps wall while they have 10' fences around their homes, complaining about the environment as they get on their private jets. Yeah socialism what a good idea because everything you own would be gone and all these people that watch your show would have absolutely no phones to watch it on. So I wish people get off the evil capitalism bullshit. We are lucky to be in a society where we can work hard and be able to spend money on entertainment. Though I have to say this looks like a really good movie movie of the year I think not that shows you how left Hollywood really is. Watching these very wealthy people virtual signal while they enjoy all the entrapments of capitalism is disgusting. Maybe it's not capitalism but the people that take advantage of it that are the problem. Like you said in this movie the young kid is pretty smart but he does nothing with it and said does he really deserve to live a better life. The movie kind of started like it was a bit humorous but it had really disturbing ending which made it feel disjointed . I guess you have to be old enough to have lived through the cold was very young But I remember how we used to be anti-socialist/ Communist. Which you shouldn't kid yourself are the same thing. All those powerful people forgets that Hitler was a socialist... #Twitterfiles

A lot of the explanations ignore the overall parasitic and charlatan nature of the poor family. They’re not entitled to the wealth of the rich family and it is largely their insecurities and shortcomings that lead them to murder. By the end of the film, the father has replaced the despicable first guy to reside in the basement, losing any dignity he had left and being reduced to flipping the lights instead of facing the consequences of his actions. His son, however, rejects this mentality as the most driven member of his family. He elects to at least try to buy the house fair and square, understanding that this is the way out. Even if he does not succeed, he will at least try. Nevertheless, the common interpretation is also valid but I don’t believe it is just “rich people bad!” They were all parasites of varying natures

Koreans have subtle lines that they understand.
When he first describe madam, he said "Young and Simple" and then
subtitle "I had fun there"
but It can be interpreted as a double meaning.

"Yeah...I liked her".

This is not a simple description, but it can be taken as a meaning of reminiscing about happy moments in the past.
and during the tutor interview, Madame said, "I was very satisfied."
After tutoring, she paid more money because "inflation"
But in fact, the money is taken out of the envelope and paid.

This film is less a class critique than it is a subversive parody of the heist trope.

There is no consideration of the Parks at the end because, like a bank or art gallery, they exist to serve as a foil for the protaganists' whacky exploits.

There is certainly aesthetic contrast between the 'elevated' life and the 'subterranean' life, but this is to serve the parody.

As for it's creator's claim that the rich are parasites as well, I submit that he is trolling us -- that this is part of the parody. (After all, it depicts the Kim's as hiding like cockroaches under the furniture. And it portrays the anodyne Park family as ... having an evilly overactive olfactory sense? That's parody gold!)

Let the flaming commence! :)
