 | I like that they make MA have fragments of a teenager mindset I remember when I had health class they would talk about how one of the last parts of the brain to fully develop for a teenager was the part that had to do with judgement decisions revolving around thinking about consequences kind of a disregard for self preservation....I can see that as soon as she hits the girl with her car. Tate Taylor modified the script to better suit an African-American woman after he showed the script to Octavia Spencer and she expressed interest in playing the role. Missi Pyle and Octavia Spencer both guest starred on Mom with Allison Janney. Octavia Spencer guest starred on the series Mom (2013) with Allison Janney (Dr. Brooks).  | I just got two things that made no damn sense to me. Why couldn't the teens run up the stairs and through the door after they were cut loose? The stairs weren't on fire, Ma went right upstairs through the door with no problem, but they act as if it was blocked with fire. And why they just couldn't put Ma in a rear-naked choke when she was trying to kill her daughter instead of stabbing her in the back...her back was turned and it was two of them?  | I'm glad Ben died horribly but the kids didn't deserve this. They were assholes but not like their parents. Mercedes deserved worse than getting hit by a vehicle.  | Octavia Spencer Is a fantastic actress! She did a phenomenal job playing the villain/ psychopath! Cheesy movie and a bit mediocre but despite those flaws i really enjoyed this movie! Not a great movie but not bad either. I’ve certainly seen worse movies. I would love to see a sequel to Ma one day. That would be so dope! I would definitely pay to see a Part Two! Now I have met parents like her who will let older teens hang out at their house and drink or even smoke a little pot, the justification being (agree or not) that they're going to being doing it anyways so it's better they're doing it at home where they're safe playing video games or whatever in the basement rather than out partying or driving around. The deaths could have been better in the middle section The ending could have been more twisted than painted white, stitched mouth, stab and iron to the chest.  | I would've liked Ma a lot more if there wasn't such strong racial undertones (desperate single mom, painting the black boy white so she can be "the only black", that one part where the girl tells Sue Ann "you need to get a MAN", even the name "Ma" is very stereotypical). The director himself grew up with "help" in his family and clearly has a fixation on older black women in sad, desperate roles. Let's not get started on Genie, who was only put in this movie to save the white kids at the end....who didn't try to save her from her mother. Maggie stepping up just wasn't satisfying. If "Ma" just f'd these kids up like she did to Mercedes without all the weirdo "die with my white crush and kiss his son", and other stereotypes, this movie would've been much better.
