In high school, a older friend took me and a buddy to Rocky around 1982. I suspected it was partly his way of telling me he was bi-, (I’m straight) which he later confirmed to me. I had some 70’s sitcom stereotype impressions about gays to the point, and this movie made me see that all political issues regarding gays was simply a matter of freedom to be yourself no matter what that meant, that all stereotypes are reductive, and that to “other” any group in your mind, on a personal level, was as much your own loss as anyone else’s.

I also loved 50’s rock and to see this menagerie of characters rocking out was such a strange joy to me. I was even able to admit to myself that, even though I was straight and remain so, that I found Tim Curry sexy in the role. There was a certain relief that if I did develop true attraction to men, it would be nothing to fear or deny myself. I can’t imagine what it must have meant to gay or bi- people trying to know and accept themselves. Yes, there is NOTHING to even compare with the impact, longevity, and creative engagement with fans that Rocky started back at that time, and sustained to this. I still attend a random late night screening every so often. Peace

Although I WISH Elvis had attended the stage show, which would be amazingly cool, I’m afraid that has to Meat Loaf’s overactive imagination (based on his story they met in the process.). Elvis almost never went to public events because his presence was so disruptive, and certainly not without his entourage. Has he gone there would have been a bunch of press coverage, photographic evidence, testament to this by other major players (it is only Meat Loaf) and accounts of it in meticulously researched biographies. It would be such a disruption of his routines and security concerns, and such a remarkable choice for him to break them for an iconic pansexually themed show, it would be cited endlessly. (He was not homophonic btw, but considering he never went to any live events, outside of Vegas at least, it’s unlikely a counter-culture alt lifestyle show would be the one to make him break his routine.)

No offense of course, I know Meat Loaf said that, but at most the only plausible meeting would be Meat Loaf attending one of Elvis shows, especially in Vegas where he received visiting stars regularly. Maybe that happened and he confused the details. All due respect to all involved, and I love your video btw.

I'm so fucking glad you included Donnie Darko as a cult classic. I was watching, and waiting and promised myself I'd go OFF in the comments if I didn't see it lol. Mainly cause I watched the directors cut recently and I now actually understand the movie, and its fucking amazing. Can't believe I actually THOUGHT I knew what the movie was about, without the scenes that let you read the book "The Philosophy of Time Travel". It's became my new favorite movie and I'm in my 30s lol

I played Riff Raff for years, first at Westhampton Theater and later when I attended San Francisco State University. I would still literally be a virgin without RHPS because the woman who took my virginity played Magenta to my Riff Raff! Our world did the Time Warp that night! I saw it often at both the Waverly Theater and the 8th Street Playhouse. Sal Piro was our leader and would get us revved up by performing his hilarious stand up comedy routines before the show. I miss him. He was an integral part of our RHPS experience. The only movie I know that you just can’t enjoy at home. You must be with a audience to truly enjoy The Rocky Horror Picture Show! I hope it plays for 100 years!

when I was in hisghschool I needed extra credits so I signed up for theater. it was a country kind of area so when the teacher was looking for ideas I thought it would be hilarious to suggest Rocky Horror Show. He actually loved the idea. I ended up playing Dr. Frank N Furter. one of the wrestlers played Rocky because his GF was playing Columbia. I hammed up the absolute shit out of that role. The audience warmed up to it eventually. The next year I worked on a musical version of Bubba Ho-Tep. the music teacher and I wrote all the songs for it. I played Elvis. Only because I wrote all the songs did I get the role. That and it's my favorite Bruce Campbell movie and I know all the lines by heart. That one went over so well a lot of people bought tickets that didn't even have kids there or anything and I even got to perform it for 2 weeks at our local theater.

@pipoo1
I was introduced to the RHPS when I was about 12/13 by an older cousin, and honestly it was a major formative experience in my life, I’ve seen the film countless times and the stage show about 5/6 times over the years. It taught me that there was a world out there waiting for my particular weirdness and to be myself whatever the pressures of high school conformity were at the time.

A friend of mine took me to an open air cinema to watch this film and I had no clue what Im about to witness.
A actual Theater performed the whole set live while the film was running.
People were singing along, throwing rice as the wedding happend, then shooting waterguns when it rained in the Film, threw toilet paper when Rocky got unrapped and so on... absolute greatness.

This movie was - is, so much fun. The question I guess I have is, - why ? - why has both the play and the movie become the phenom that it has ? Less than one million to produce, - and now it's still playing all over for going on 50 years now; I won't even guess how much money that translates into. This flick has no genre; they'll have to create a new one and call it 'Just a lotta fun'.

@truepeacenik
I was in middle school the first time I was aware of RHPS, courtesy of the movie Fame.
I was in what would have been my junior year of high school, that was my freshman year in community college (bored smarty pants me took the GED and headed to cheap college), I started seeing Rocky with my roommates. We collectively bounced between three or four theaters as cast (shadow cast made sense, but we didn’t use the term).

It was five or so years of my life, and my first time belonging.

I became part of another community around art, DeadHeads. Between the two, I solidified an inclusive, socially liberal outlook.

The Misfits were a primary tool for that stick-to-it sensibility that pulled me to the guitar. Hendrix helped me along and gave me a good ear and dexterity. RHPC will educate musically in such varied ways that your cover band will be a bigger hit. Learn 3 songs from that show. You've got a leg up (forgive the pun) on your next audition or the next band being hired. It can't be said loudly enough. The songwriting is pure genius.

I have a somewhat sad history with this movie. Paired with the christian upbringing, I ended up with this movie stuck in my head whenever I was faced with my inner nature. In a way, the reaction my dad has to the movie kept preventing me from accepting myself. I have since cut off the awful family and am going about my life as my whims go. I am glad I got over the complex and accepted myself as being trans.

@r8chlletters
It’s shortsighted to say this movie is about sexual freedom and gender acceptance. That is simply a facade here. This is a work dedicated to those who can liberate their creative mind and think beyond the linear. It’s for the forgotten and for the “other” in everyone. It’s utterly universal. Alice in Wonderland was also not about women’s liberation. These deep and resonating themes reach much farther and are the reason so many from such different walks of life are touched deeply by them.

FUN FACT! I became a fan of RHPS from the movie 'Fame,' released in 1980. There is a scene at the show, Sal in front of the screen in this shot. I was enthralled with the deviance of this movie-within-a-movie. I found the midnight showing in Atlanta, and for the next year went from Virgin to Shadow Cast member. My time with my castmates is what kept me sane during an otherwise dark time. I just took my 21yo son to his first theatrical viewing. I learned some new lines, threw out the standards, and lost my voice in the process of reliving the dream. Oh yeah, I also met Patricia Quinn, so my life is now complete. Great video - you captured everything I was trying to explain to my son, who couldn't understand what a shadow cast was. RHPS is the OG Cosplay!!

I hate to admit this, but I finally watched the film for the first time a few weeks ago. Immediately after it was over, I came to the realization of how THAT era of film is LONG since dead and gone and what a horrible tragedy that is. You just don’t see films willing to take massive risks in it’s presentation and themes as this film does. Everything now is a sequel, prequel, remake or reboot. And if it’s not that, it’s some watered down, mass appeal product, rolling of the conveyer belt. This film dared to be different and went all in on it’s vision and I would rather watch a movie like this, even if it was nowhere entertaining as this, than watch a soft, safe, predictable product any day of the week. Can we PLEASE bring this era of film back???

I think it's about normal people taking an unexpected stop at "weird-land" where they confront their own weirdness and accept it. I think since so many people learned to accept their own weirdness from this film, it can be addicting to return to it and re-accept it again when society may return the feeling of weirdness to them which is absolved for them by watching the film. It might be similar to the motivations of why a Christian goes to confession: absolution.
