Ive been putting it off since it came out thinking that I just wouldn't care for it. Just watched it and wow. Actually loved it. Started off like eh but halfway through I was completely roped in. The third act was a treat for sure.

Don't feel it was to engage emotionally it was in fact to make us feel separate and isolated as where the character's.

@gregorianallanheavans8095
I may disagree with just one point. Your idea of the necessity of an emotional connection. I personally think that, even if it's not connected at all with Virgina Woolf's book "To the Lighthouse", it reminded me of it for its strong ambiguity and sense of alienation. And honestly I never felt fully connected to any of Woolf's characters or situation, but surely I was mesemerized by the way everything was stylistically realized. That is the core of that novel. The styles.
Art may bring emotions, but I think it's not a must and a misconception.
Sometimes art can be pure style, when the style is able to be so unique to breath by its own.

@peterhavord5984
This is an excellent, atmospheric film that grabs your attention right from the start with fine acting by Dafoe, Patterson and the one-eyed seagull; superb B&W cinematography; a great score (including ominous fog horn); and thoughtful editing. The only real problem I think is the dialogue - Dafoe's character is just a bit too garrulous. While I enjoyed much of Dafoe's poetic, seafaring dialect I think Eggars got somewhat carried away by having Defoe say too much. Such a strikingly visual and atmospheric film would have benefitted with less dialogue and more poignant silences and body language. The references to Prometheus are also a little laboured. However, there's no doubt Eggars is a compelling cinema talent.

@leto7789
noone ive seen online has figured out what actually happened, which is mind blowing to me, because its all in the script, and its amazing....here, ill explain it to everyone.... willem defoe is Neptune. the god of the sea. Robert Pattison let a man die in a river while he was logging, because the man was his superior and treated him like garbage.... that man, who Patteson let die, is the spirit in the seagull that is tormenting him. Because he let this man die in the sea, Neptune brought him to his abode to test him, like a trial. to see what he did it for. it was a crime. Neptune became what Patteson murdered. He became the worst kind of superior. goading him. humiliating him. overworking and underpaying him.... Pattesons character was already in hell. this was hell... Defoe's character says in one scene, "maybe you arent even here, maybe youre in some field somewhere", which could imply he was literally buried in a field somewhere, meaning, maybe he was dead and this was the afterlife...... Neptune was pushing Patteson to his breaking point to see if he repeated the behavior. he didnt know why "winslow" did what he did, until he got drunk and spilled the beans. this is all what Defoe's character meant by, this is boring. you are boring. the same old story.... implying he had hope that Patteson might not have just been a selfish killer with a temper and inferiority complex. it also implies, Neptune was waiting to see why Winslow did what he did before he passed sentence.... when Defoe cursed Patteson with that 2 minute long diatribe, that was Neptune laying down his sentence...... when patteson saw the drowned seagul in the vat of oil or whatever that stuff was, that was a metaphore for him letting a man drown, then the one eyed seagull showing up, was a direct editorial choice to link the drowned seagul to the man (the actual winslow) and let you know that they are the same character. Neptunes punishment was par for the course in greek/roman mythology. which was the point. The seagull was Neptunes way of testing Pattesons temper. this was all about Pattesons temper.... the alcohol was Neptunes way of reducing Patteson down to his most primal state. There never was any time. When Defoe keeps mentioning time, hes messing with Pattesons head. there is no time on Neptunes island. you have to take the film literally. and listen to the dialogue carefully. all of it is explaining the point of the film. theres no need to read into this film. its not ambiguous. its not meant to be avante garde asmuch as its meant to be an homage to ancient storytelling. ancient stories. the witch is the same way. black peter doesnt represent anything. he is literally the devil in the form of a black goat. you know what im saying? Patteson wasnt having hallucinations that could be interperated in several different ways. he was literally dead and being tried for his crimes by the god of the sea. thats what happened in the movie that you all completely missed. i dont know how. i feel like the movie would suck if it was merely some interperative dance. some mind game. some film that your supposed to guess whether the main character is crazy or sane. i dont think youre even supposed to do that. hes not insane. hes dead. if you rewatch the movie with this in mind, youll see it all. this is exactly the point of the story. the entire movie follows through on this.

@rome8180
I agree with this review. It was refreshing to see someone with some of the reservations I had. While I LOVED it on an aesthetic level, I didn't get a lot of meaning out of the story. I thought it would have been better if one of the characters had maintained his sanity. As it was, you didn't have anything to ground you. It's still a terrific movie, but this is the reason Parasite is so superior to me. It has more to say.

@chester6671
**Spoilers*** Some random thoughts as I was watching "The Lighthouse".

- The crowd is mostly older people and it's about a third full.
- The black and white looks great. High contrast.
- Nice sound effects with the horn of the boat.
- Can't understand what Willem Dafoe is saying.
- OK, he sounds like Donald Duck. Slurring everything. Can understand him now.
- Willem is bossing Robert around. He's going to drive him mad.
- Robert doing chores. Willem mentions the previous mate went mad. Classic foreshadowing.
- The idea of Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse keeps coming up in my mind. Bossy Donald Duck is picking on nice poor Mickey Mouse.
- I'm starting to like the seagull.
- The death of the seagull and the mermaid is really good. At this point, I'm hopeful.
- They miss the boat. They're dead.
- They start drinking and arguing. The acting is really good.
- Shit hits Robert's face. Funny. Good thing they didn't show a close-up.

- Enough with the drinking. I'm getting disappointed.
- Some weird imagery starts popping up. I guess to show Robert is getting mad. I take note in my mind that some people will read too much into them.
- Robert is masturbating while naked and crying. Robert fans will salivate over this.
- Willem does his monologues. I wish his monologue about king Triton was literal. I was picturing it in my head, and missed some of his dialogue.
- Robert is leading Willem like a dog on a leash. Out of character, he'll fight more.

- Willem getting buried alive. Weird that he's just giving up. Robert leaves him alive. OK, Willem is definitely coming back for revenge. Too obvious.
- Willem is dead. More weird imagery. Once again, I think of people who will read too much into this.
- I see an older woman walk out. I don't blame her. I'm rating it 3 out of 5 stars in my head, mostly for the filmmaking and performance aspects, not the story.
- The seagulls are eating Robert alive. Interesting image.

As far as bizarre movies go this is one of the very best. I definitely am not going to research any references in this movie. The fart jokes are perfect because they set a certain vibe of absurdity that develops throughout the story and also if you recall as he was farting he was pissing in his bedpan in the room that they both share so we have this notion of personal space being depleted.

I just wanna say something about the rating system , the reason I said you should use a rating system out of 10 is because you can give movies more detailed scores without looking obsessive , like you can give a movie an 8.5/10 and it seems normal but a 4.25/5 (essentially the same thing ) seems obsessive with a 5 star system .

Awesome review. And I think i would have thought similar if I were a woman on this one. This may come off as sexist but I assure you i don't mean it this way. The masculinity I do believe is the main emotional resonance in here. I feel like it wouldn't completely hit home for someone if they don't relate to the sexual frustration from isolation, and the alpha male vs beta male aspects. This one blew me down ten fold being a sailor in the navy myself. This is an incredible movie and best of the year for me along with Midsommar

@GA-1st
Nicely done! Getting a mass audience to see this inscrutable, B/W movie is an uphill battle. The Witch, except for the horrid finale, was a great movie. This rich, densely themed cinematic odyssey is great in its ambition, if not in scope. An nigh absurdist attempt to explain the power of myth, both personal and ancient, and the role they play in our humanity. That said, it's not for your average Joe - or Josephine. It's almost as enigmatic as the host's quite subtle but unmistakable accent...

@looney1023
I think I would have enjoyed the film more if there were subtitles. I completely agree on the lack of emotionally connection. I couldn't connect to the dialogue because most of the time I was lost in the words the characters were saying. All I had to connect to was the filmmaking, sound, and visuals, which were absolutely spellbinding. The score of this film surrounding me in the theatre was one of the most immersive experiences I've ever had in a cinema.

My biggest problem with films that broach the topic of sanity is that regardless of what happens, the film can justify it by saying that character is insane, and the logic ultimately doesn't matter anymore. I couldn't follow the story and I just assumed it was because I wasn't supposed to be able to, which ultimately disconnected me more.

The best way I can describe my response to this film is that I still feel like I haven't seen it.

@scrombled
I really agree! I love the unique visuals that Eggers provided in this, but I feel like a majority of the film excludes the audience, and I feel like The VVitch did this too. That’s why I prefer Ari Aster as A24’s best horror writer, something about his work just makes you feel like you’re right there with the characters, experiencing the trauma on the same levels that they do.

I loved the film. Beautifully shot, amazing Lynchian sound design and overflowing with rich, multilayered thematic elements. Plus, it was just creepy as hell, up there with Eraserhead, The Shining and Session 9. I agree in general with you on fart jokes, but I thought it worked here. It added to the claustrophobic atmosphere and also the character's mixture of disrespect for youth and disregard for societal norms.
